I-500 Weekend!

Every February there is a race in the Upper Peninsula (Sault Ste. Marie) called the I-500. It's a snowmobile race---freezing, icy fun...and a race only the U.P. could host each year. This was our first I-500 race. Chris and Marissa took us and showed us what it was all about. They went to school up in the Soo and have attended this race many times. It was quite the experience! The temperature at the start of the race was 6 degrees. We were bundled up and ready to go!
A few times during the day we took a "break" inside the beverage tent to warm up. They had huge heaters blowing hot air through the tent! There's only so many times you can watch snowmobiles racing around a 1-mile track. The race lasted almost 8 hours....500 laps. Needless to say we didn't watch the whole thing :) We had fun meeting friends of Chris and Marissa, eating, and trying to stay warm!

The beverage tent had drinks for $3. We considered this a rip off, but eventually gave in just to get inside the tent to warm up :) It was the longest time I had worn snowpants, a coat, mittens, and a hat in a VERY long time!

This was the track. There were about 30+ racers and you watched them from a huge snowbank where MANY trailors, and tents were set up for your viewing pleasure. Definitely quite a "U.P." experience! These people take this race so seriously! In the end...an Arctic Cat snowmobile won the race.

After the race we headed out on the "town" and had a delicious mexican dinner and hit the pubs for some coffee with Bailey's :) It was a really fun weekend! Chris and Marissa enjoyed showing us around their "stomping grounds" for a couple days, and we took it in! In Michigan...there are many things you can do when it's frigid outside! This....was one of them!
